Designed to give its user information about on-field performance, including speed, maximum speed, number of sprints, time, and distance, the Adizero f50 is perhaps the smartest shoe the world has ever seen. The packaging for this special edition product is appropriately premium, a polyurethane-coated paper with a rubberized texture, and gloss and foil applied to the board. The outer case is made of a 3mm Glow Edge perspex, screen-printed with the adidas logo. The shoe is held in place by magnets placed in the sole and the floor of the pack.

Though this is just a concept, it is nonetheless a thoroughly usable idea, and one that should be implemented. The pack contains all the elements needed to start a fire, and can be disposed of in that fire when emptied. Along with being highly functional, this is a handsome little concept.

While the structure of the pack is interesting enough, it’s the graphic treatment that really pushes this pack into the “something altogether different” category. More often than not, pet foods and treats don’t present their nutritional information in a way that consumers can actually use. Here though, all the relevant information is placed front and center on the pack, and if the hard facts are too much, consumers have a visual indication of the chief ingredient.

Taking its name from the rhetoric of our nation’s birth, this packaging is appropriately substantial for a special-edition product made in the heart of our nation’s capital. A hinged wooden box carries the four pack, and is etched with a product description. Meanwhile, each of the four brews is dedicated to one of our founding documents (Articles of Confederation, Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights), with an excerpt printed on the label. A beautiful special edition pack for a beer you’d probably never let yourself drink.

What we like most about this pack is it’s disposability, as far too often packaging ends up as waste. Apart from dissolving cleanly, this pack is simple yet intriguing enough to stand on its own, independent of its waste-freeness.

Couched in a Chinese/Japanese tradition of tying a red thread around the ankle/little finger of lovers who are destined, this student sake packaging is as beautiful as it is thoughtful.

The key aspect to this concept is the male/female aspect of the two bottles, evoking the romance of the red thread mythology. The bottles contain distinctly different sakes–Junmai Nigori and Ginjo–which have their own personalities; the Nigori a sweeter white sake, and the Ginjo and stronger flavor. The wooden case finishes the pack, and presents the distinctive shape of the two bottles.

Charismatic packaging for minimalist headphones out of Denmark.

The good design on display here starts with the headphones themselves, which are handsome throwbacks to the Walkman days. But the presentation is equally noteworthy (to us anyway, as we are packaging designers). A sturdy rigid board pack unfolds to reveal the product through a foggy plastic. The over-the-head phones in particular are presented intriguingly, with all the component pieces separated. A glossy, symbolist artwork treatment finishes this dynamic pack.

Housed in a fine porcelain slipcast with a 22k gold-plated interior, with a hammered brass cover, and individually numbered, this almost excessively luxurious case was made in a quantity of 15. That’s right, 15. At $500 a pop this can officially be called artisan perfume for the 1%.

This innovative design from liquid packaging manufacturers Sidel increases the number of bottles per pallet by 40%.

Designed to nest more efficiently than a standard shape water bottle, Sidel’s concept for the Stack & Pack bottle also eliminates the need for interlayers (i.e. packing layers between bottles). This is the sort of innovation that requires small changes to make big ones, and we look forward to seeing this pack on the market.

Concept work from the Netherlands, revealing the extremes you can go to with nothing but paperboard.

With the goal of creating a paperboard tube with a literal twist, designer Remko van Buren utilized a series of triangles and parallelograms to complete his concept. By locking the two ends, the pack holds its shape effectively. And with all this action, Van Buren somehow found a way for the pack to remain utterly manufacturable.
